. we're going to fix this problem. >> a preview of ryan versus biden from the prism of friends. republican party chairman and then philadelphia mayor michael nutter. >> hello, ohio. >> i love ohio. >> and sizing up the crown jewel of battlegrounds with ohio state attorney general mike dewine and former ohio governor ted strickland. plus, the politics of numbers. explaining the jobs report and weighing its impact with moody's analytic chief econost mark zandi and douglas holtz-akin, and white house correspondent jackie kol linz, and cnn's chief white house correspondent jessica yellin. i'm candy crowley. and this is "state of the union." >>> it was not unanimous, but there was overwhelming consensus among viewers and pundits that mitt romney shined in denver's debate season opener and the president did not. the new yorker magazine summed it up with a cover cartoon of romney debating an empty chair. the captain "mitt stands alone." campaigns are only as good as their last news cycle, so on to danville, kentucky, and thursday night's battle of the number twos. joining me now are p

biden topped 70 million americans. so the audience is huge. you have been in denver the past three days. what are you picking up from the romney team, from the obama campaign? >> i think the romney team is looking for a big night. they are looking for a game changer for all the talk about how it doesn't have to be everything. this is a big moment for this campaign. they sense nationally that they are on the verge of closing the gap. and in these battleground states some of these states seem like they are spreading apart like ohio. but they think this is a changing moment. i read one interview anecdotally about ann romney saying the first thing mitt romney does when he gets in these debate is he walks on stage, he puts the watch on the podium. he where is on the piece of paper, dad, because of his dad george romney also ran for president. then he finds ann romney in the crowd. and i think that that -- we'll be watching for that. how governor romney handles the first minutes of his persona tonight will make a big statement about how this whole thing goes. bill: thank you, bret, we'll see

in charlotte, north carolina, wolf, biden said how can the romney campaign justify raising taxes on the middle class that has been buried -- in his words, buried, the last four years. paul ryan at a campaign event in iowa just a few moments ago seized on those comments and said vice president biden said that the middle class has been buried. we agree. he goes onto say that means we need to stop digging by electing mitt romney the next president of the united states, wolf. i have a strg sense this will be brought up at tomorrow night's debate, wolf. >> we'll have a lot more on what joe biden has just said and the very tough reaction coming in from the romney campaign. gloria borger is standing by on that front. both of these campaigns are bringing major surrogates to denver to appear in the so-called spin room after the debate tomorrow night. what are you learning about the romney campaign's people who are coming in? >> reporter: wolf, it's probably no surprise rob portman, mitt romney's chief sparring partner playing barack obama in the debate, he'll be in the spin room. but we've also learned

biden at a rally in charlotte. >> this is deadly earnest. how they can justify, how they can justify raising taxes on the middle class that's been buried the last four years. >> in the richest country in the history of the world this obama economy has crushed the middle class. >> reporter: romney's ad team quickly seized on the remarks churning out a web video. at an event in denver rubio piled on. >> those happen to be the words of the distinguished vice president of the united states mr. joe biden. no, don't boo. he's the best thing we got going, guys. don't boo. because in a moment of clarity, in a brief moment of clarity he just told us what we already knew. >> reporter: romney's aides say they expect the president to call on the gop nominee to offer specifics. >> we're going to limit deductions. >> reporter: but in an interview with the denver tv station, romney began to do just that. >> well, you could do something for instance as an option you could say everybody's going to get up to a $17,000 deduction. and you can use your charitable deduction or home mortgage deduction or o

and a lot of obama/biden signs and not a single romney sign evident anywhere i went in western and central massachusetts all weekend long. i wonder if scott brown could do anything to make himself seem like a nonrepublican nominee at this point that you think would be credible. is there a way to separate himself? >> no. he's trying very hard, but it's not credible. he's sending out e-mails. we have seen the documents where he says, give me money so i can block the obama agenda. elect me so i can be a part of the check on president obama. we also have his voting record. it was noted that of the first 32 votes on breaking filibusters when scott brown was in the senate, he voted with his republican colleagues 30 of the 32 times. he will try hard to dissemble. the notion he hasn't made up his mind for majority leader is one of the least honest things i have heard said. and he's going to have the -- this is going to be his serious bump. he's going to vote to make the most right wingers -- in power, a man who would be destructive in any effort. i don't see any way for him to credibly deny he is
